Reuven Dar, PhD, Professor Emeritus, School of Psychological Sciences, Tel Aviv University, Israel

Professor Reuven Dar received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1987. He completed his clinical internship and postdoctoral training at the Department of Psychiatry at the UW Medical School. He has been a member of the faculty of the School of Psychological Sciences at Tel Aviv University since 1988 and has served as the head of the clinical graduate program for several terms. He heads the doctoral committee at the School and represents the School on the faculty doctoral committee. Dr. Dar is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Behviour Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry.

As an international expert in the psychology of obsessive-compulsive disorder  (OCD), Dr. Dar’s work has led to the development of a comprehensive model of OCD, which postulates that obsessive-compulsive symptoms can be understood in terms of deficient access to internals states and compensatory reliance on “proxies” for these states. This model has been supported by empirical studies using a variety of paradigms and measures, ranging from experimental tasks to self-report. A comprehensive review of this work has recently been published in Behaviour Research and Therapy.

Dr. Dar also leads pioneering work in the psychological and biological determinants of smoking, specifically exploring the role of habit formation and nicotine. He is currently working with a start-up company that can detect smoking gestures in real time using wearable technology to harness this technology for improved smoking monitoring and cessation.

In addition to his academic position, research and teaching, Dr. Dar continues to be involved in clinical work and supervision, particularly with OCD and anxiety patients. He maintains an active clinical practice, and his teaching at the graduate clinical track program includes a course in which clinical graduate students can observe him conducting therapy with a real patient during an academic semester.
